Uterine fibroids, or leiomyomas, are common benign smooth muscle tumours that have originated from uterine myometrial cells.4
Symptoms
Uterine fibroids can cause a range of symptoms, including:5
- abnormal uterine bleeding
- pelvic pressure
- bowel dysfunction
- urinary frequency and urgency
- urinary retention
- low back pain
- constipation
- dyspareunia
Prevalence
Uterine fibroids are estimated to occur in 40–90% of women by the age of 50.4
